Job Summary

This Associate Director (AD) will lead the development and implementation of knowledge management (KM) plans and oversee the development of KM products for a wide variety of audiences. These materials are intended to showcase FHI 360’s research evidence and programmatic experience and, subsequently, encourage uptake of best practices in global health and development programs. The AD will ensure that products are accessible through Vine and other essential systems so that materials, lessons learned, and other deliverables are available outside of the project. The candidate also will develop and direct strategic communications plans in collaboration with project, KM, and communications staff to meet project and funder objectives. The candidate will monitor these projects, and their budgets, from initiation through delivery. The AD will manage a team of science writers, editors, translators, and graphic and instructional designers.

Accountabilities

  • Provide technical oversite to the KM and strategic communications components of one or more projects and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures – and relevant branding and marking plans, as necessary.
  • Design, monitor, and evaluate activities.
  • Supervise a team of writers, editors, graphic and instructional designers, and translators.
  • Support capacity building of team and project staff to meet strategic goals.
  • Manage the operational and strategic functions of the KM team within the Research Utilization Division to ensure the quality of products for external dissemination.
  • Work closely with project managers to identify KM and strategic communications priorities and products/deliverables and to develop and implement short- and long-range plans.
  • Gather, synthesize, and distill information to create engaging, compelling, and high-quality deliverables that amplify FHI 360’s experience, lessons learned, and impact.
  • Support performance management and professional development of direct reports, including ongoing feedback, coaching, and career support.
  • Participate in business development efforts, leading and contributing to proposals as appropriate.
  • Select, develop, and evaluate personnel to ensure that the team functions efficiently and to high standards.
  • Liaise with FHI 360 Corporate Communications and Knowledge Exchange to disseminate project messages and deliverables through corporate channels.
  • Promote team’s abilities and contributions to help maintain a steady workflow and/or increase client requests for support.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Applied Knowledge and Skills

  • Proven track record of developing and implementing knowledge management and strategic communications strategies for large global projects, ideally related to public health and development.
  • Hands-on experience in social media and digital engagement for the purposes of strategic communications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the range of activities that comprise the publication process.
  • Ability to understand highly technical information and translate it into products suitable to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Exceptional and demonstrated writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage people and projects.
  • Solid critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to motivate, influence, and work well with others to achieve project, departmental, and organizational goals.
  • Ability to meet budget, schedule, and performance requirements.
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of political and ethical issues surrounding the organization’s work.
  • Ability to maintain resiliency during periods of high job demand.

  • Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Supervision Given/Received

  • Manages staff to meet departmental and organizational goals.
  • Accounts for budgets, procedures, and training of staff to achieve results.
  • Manages workloads of team to maintain efficient operations.
  • Recommends solutions to management on knowledge management/communications activities and products.
  • Typically reports to a Director.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent in English, technical communications, strategic communications, knowledge management, or related field.
  • Master’s degree preferred

Experience

  • Typically requires 8+ years of project management experience related KM and communications in a research environment.
  • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear and positive manner with clients and staff.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • Prior work experience in international development preferred.

  • Typical office environment.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.

Travel Requirements

  • 5 to 10%
